Haitian Diaspora proposes solutions for electoral crisis – JamaicaObserver.com

“Leaders in the Diaspora stand ready to come to Haiti to assist in reaching out a political solution out of this crisis. As Haitians, what unites us is the love for our country and the idea that Haiti can again become the pearl of the Caribbean; this cause for unity is greater than anything that could potentially divide us,” the statement said. The proposals by the Haitian Diaspora follows a call from opposition presidential candidates who want changes to the country’s electoral council and police hierarchy ahead of this month’s presidential runoff.Led by presidential candidate Jude Célestin, the group, dubbed the G8, made their demand in a communiqué issued in November .According to the group, there is need for an independent recount , a transition government and the scripting of a new constitution.Since the release of the election results on October 25, thousands of protesters have taken to the streets amid allegations that the vote was plagued by massive fraud. The group has declared that without major changes fair elections will not be held while outgoing president Michel Martelly is in power .
