Haiti celebrates carnival amidst continuing political tension – La Prensa

Protest1 Protests“I congratulate the organizers and the artists for their creativity and a very well-organized procession,” Paul noted in a statement to Efe, and appealed to all participants to celebrate the festive period peacefully and enjoy it in a moderate and peaceful manner.

Many of the participants at the Jacmel carnival come from Port-au-Prince and return to the capital to continue their activities in a personal and professional capacity.

However, many of them fear attacks from opposition groups that have called a two-day general strike owing to threats to those who refuse to honor the strike.

Andre Fardeau, of the opposition Lavalas Family party, which is among those that called the strike, termed the series of walkouts as “Operation Empty Streets.”

“We don’t want to see any vehicles on the streets on Monday and Tuesday. This is a warning to to all those who are going to carry on with their usual business. You have to remain in your homes because we want the streets empty,” Fardeau said. via La Prensa
