The loss of human life was tremendous and horrifying, even if there have been conflicting reports on the exact numbers. The official death toll is 316,000 people, according to the Haitian government. Some estimates have put fatalities at fewer than half that.More than 1.5 million people were displaced from their homes, according to the International Organization for Migration.In the weeks that followed, medical relief teams, missionaries and humanitarians descended on Haiti from all over the world.I worked then for the Valley News, the newspaper of record in the region surrounding Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. Photographer Jason Johns and I had been sent to cover the efforts of Dartmouth doctors and nurses.
