The return represented a defeat for the 110 Haitians who were detained while trying to cross illegally into the Bahamas. For several others who disappeared when the sailboat ran into trouble, the voyage was a fatal decision.

Bahamian authorities said at least 30 people from the ship died.

Undocumented migrants face many risks when seeking to cross international borders, from criminal organizations to difficult terrain.
